Hitting your protein target on Hyderabad food

Most training plans in Hyderabad fail at the dinner table, not in the gym. Not because the food is bad, but because a standard local day — idli at eight, canteen rice at one, chai and biscuit at five, biryani at nine — lands somewhere near 45 grams of protein when you need closer to double that. Here is how to fix it without giving up anything you actually like.
Your actual target
For someone training three to five times a week, aim for roughly 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day. A 70 kg member is looking at about 110 to 115 grams; an 85 kg member around 135.
Split it across three or four eating occasions rather than chasing it all at dinner. Thirty grams at a time is a sensible working unit.
Breakfast: the meal that costs you the most
Idli, dosa, upma and poha are all excellent food and almost entirely carbohydrate. Two idlis with sambar is about 6 grams of protein. That is not a breakfast for someone squatting three times a week.
You do not need to abandon tiffin — you need to add to it.
- Two or three boiled eggs alongside idli or dosa: +12 to 18 g.
- A bowl of curd instead of just chutney: +6 to 10 g.
- Pesarattu (moong dal dosa) instead of plain dosa: roughly double the protein.
- Sambar-heavy over chutney-heavy: dal is where the protein hides.
Lunch: canteen and tiffin-box strategy
The office canteen plate in most Gachibowli and Financial District parks is rice-dominant. Reverse the ratio: ask for less rice, more dal, more curd, and add a chicken or paneer curry as a side rather than treating the sambar as your protein source.
If you carry a box, cook the protein in bulk on Sunday — a kilo of chicken or a large batch of chana or rajma — and let the carb be whatever is convenient during the week.
- 150 g chicken curry (drained of oil): about 30 g protein.
- 100 g paneer: about 18 g. Tofu is similar and cheaper by weight.
- One katori of chana or rajma: 7 to 9 g — useful, but not a protein source on its own.
The biryani question
Nobody in this city is giving up biryani, and nobody should. A single-portion chicken dum biryani sits roughly between 700 and 900 calories with about 30 to 35 grams of protein, most of it in two or three pieces of chicken.
Treat it as one of your protein meals, not a write-off: order the chicken-heavy version, eat the raita, leave a third of the rice, and skip the second helping. Once or twice a week fits inside almost any plan.
Vegetarian in Hyderabad
It is entirely doable but requires deliberate structure, because the default veg plate is rice, roti and vegetable curry — carb, carb, carb.
Anchor every meal on one of: paneer, tofu, curd or a thick dal. Then add a scoop of whey or a soy-based supplement if you are still short by evening, which most vegetarians are.
- Curd or a glass of buttermilk with every main meal: an easy 15 to 20 g across the day.
- Sprouts as an evening snack instead of biscuits with chai.
- Peanut chutney and groundnut are protein-ish, but mostly fat — do not count on them.
Evening chai and late delivery
The 5 PM Irani chai and Osmania biscuit is a ritual, not a nutrition problem — the biscuits are. Swap in roasted chana, a boiled egg or a handful of peanuts and you turn a gap in the day into 10 to 15 grams.
For late-night delivery after a 9 PM session, grilled chicken, kebabs, egg bhurji and curd rice all travel well. Fried starters and cheese-loaded anything do not.
FAQs
- How much protein do I need if I train at a gym in Hyderabad?
- Around 1.6 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day for most people training three to five times a week — roughly 110 grams for a 70 kg person.
- Can I eat biryani and still lose fat?
- Yes. A chicken biryani is 700–900 calories with 30–35 g of protein. Eaten once or twice a week, with less rice and more chicken, it fits inside a fat-loss plan.
- Is it harder to hit protein as a vegetarian in Hyderabad?
- Harder, not impossible. Anchor each meal on paneer, tofu, curd or a thick dal, and most vegetarians will still need a whey or soy supplement to close the last 20–30 grams.
- Does RYZE offer nutrition guidance?
- Yes. Coaches set habit and nutrition targets alongside training inside the member app, and the Transform 90 programme includes basic nutrition guidance.
